To conclude, Plus500 is a licensed and regulated broker and it is safe to trade with them. But the broker may not be able to satisfy all your trading needs. For example, if you are a day trader, Plus500 is the wrong broker for you as it does not permit scalping. Also, if you are a beginner, you may prefer an online broker that offers a wider range of educational sources.
We recommend Plus 500 for its easy-to-use trading platform, industry experience, 2000+ trading instruments, excellent customer support, negative balance protection, and absolutely no hidden fees.
If you are a beginner, start with a demo account as CFD trading is associated with high risks. Find out exactly how CFD trading works before you start trading with real money.
Tip 1: Use the webtrader
Plus500 offers an advanced software package that can be downloaded or be used via the webtrader. We recommend using the webtrader because the current version of the Plus500 webtrader is better than the software you can download. The webtrader is easier to use and the charts just look better. Click here to open the webtrader.
An additional advantage of the web trader is that it works on all computers. Even if you dont use Windows on your PC you can still trade with Plus500. The webtrader does not require downloading and works excellent on MAC OS and Linux as well.

Tip 2: Focus on the longer trends
With the Plus500 trading platform it is tempting to do multiple transactions per day. However, few day traders are actually successful. You will increase your chances of being profitable in the long run if you focus on the longer time frames (1 hour, 4 hours, day) instead of short time frames (1 minute, 5 minutes). If the trend is up, you should buy the dips; if the trend is down, short the pullbacks. Don’t let yourself be distracted by the short term noise during the trading session!
Tip 3: Mobile trading with Plus500
We aren’t telling anything new when we say that everyone likes to keep track of his/her open positions. That is exactly why Plus500 offers the possibility to trade with a mobile app. All you need is an Android (smartphone) or Apple device (iPhone or iPad) that is connected to internet. Go to the Appstore and search for “Plus500”. You can easily download the mobile trading app and you can start trading immediately, wherever you are and whenever you want. If you do not wish to download the app onto your mobile device, you can also use the mobile version of the webtrader.
Tip 4: Short selling: speculating on price drops
Many beginning traders are intrigued by the so-called short selling. We have already explained that in the case of short selling, one does not anticipate a price increase, but a price decrease. If the price drops, you will generate a profit. The possibility to go short means that the direction of the stock market is no longer important for a trader. The important thing is that it does move, either upwards or downwards. The degree to which prices move in the stock market is called volatility. Just like with a long position, it is essential to closely monitor your short position and to manage the stops properly. If you don’t, you risk losing your entire trading position.
Tip 5: Beware of counterparty risk
A CFD is a contract between yourself and the broker. The broker is your counterparty and in some cases it may be risky to execute all transactions with only one broker. In 2015, the well-known Alpari broker went bankrupt and customers had to wait months before they received their money (in part). So if you want to start trading with a lot of money, we recommend you to trade with different brokers to limit the counterparty risk. Compare the best CFD brokers here >>
Tip 6: Consider your available financial resources
Of course, this tip does not apply exclusively to traders of Plus 500, but to anyone who chooses to trade in CFDs. After all, for such a short-term way of trading you always require sufficient trading capital. Many people often go one step too far and they end up in financial difficulties. Obviously, you want to avoid this at all costs. To ensure you never run into financial troubles, you need to determine the amount of capital you can afford to lose. Trading in CFDs is, just like any other form of trading, only interesting when you do so with money that you do not really need to live. So having your last savings deposited on your Plus500 account each month is not a good idea.
When the trading goes well and you have made a nice profit, you might soon be tempted to start trading with larger amounts. After all, one glimpse at your account teaches you that you have more than sufficient financial resources. That in itself is of course very contagious, but trading with larger amounts also means putting more money at risk. In that respect, it is never a bad idea to withdraw some of your profits from your Plus500 account on a regular. Your money may be just sitting there, but you always have some kind of buffer in case you make a big loss. If you keep reinvesting your profits in new trades you don’t have this kind of buffer and you risk losing all your profits in just one losing trade.
Despite these warnings, we also discourage you to trade with extremely small amounts. Nowadays, thanks to the existence of the Plus500 trading platform, trading has become possible for a particularly large target group. However, the fact that the opportunity to trade exists does not mean that every moment is interesting to trade. For example, many beginning short-term traders only have very limited capital. There are several reasons for this. For example, it may be that they start trading at a young age so that they have not yet had the opportunity to build up a larger capital. On the other hand, it can also be because someone just does not have enough income to build up a trading capital. Anyway, it is important for every trade to realize that trading with small amounts such as 100 euros is often not a good idea. CFD brokers charge costs for keeping open a position. These costs can quickly increase considerably if they are too large in relation to the amount invested. Conclusion: trade with amounts that are not too small and not too large. For Plus500, we recommend you start trading with at least 500 to 1000 euros.
Tip 7: Panic is a bad counsellor
Tip 7 is perhaps one of the most important tips that we can give you as a trader. As a beginning short-term trader you will eventually express your preference for a long or short position. Earlier in this manual we have already explained the differences between the two methods. Depending on your choice, it may occur at a certain moment that a large loss appears in your account. In that case, a ki panic reaction can occur in which you immediately close a large number of positions. However, that it is (most of the time) not the best thing to do. Not only are you immediately faced with a large loss, it will most likely also influence your future trades. It is absolutely recommended for every trader to try to keep a cool head and not to react too impulsively, even when large losses occur. The article “CFD risk management” is a very interesting article to learn how to protect your trading capital.
Tip 8: Diversification is important
For short-term traders, and perhaps even more so for starting traders, it is essential to have sufficient diversification within their portfolio. One important proverb that every trader should be well-aware of is the following: “Don’t put all your eggs in the same basket”. It immediately makes clear what investing is all about; diversification. If you have a budget of 10,000 euros, use only 1000 euros to trade in CFDs. The remaining amount should be invested in bonds, dividend shares, real estate certificates and so on.
Tip 9: Do not invest in things you know nothing about
Through this manual we have hopefully given a good insight into the functioning and characteristics of CFDs. However, in the end it is impossible to provide all information. As a trader, it is essential that you understand, not only how to trade, but also what you are trading. Opening a position is something everyone can do, but getting a return is much more difficult. As indicated earlier in this manual, many external factors have a direct or indirect influence on the price of a certain trading instrument. A poor harvest can, for example, significantly influence the price of wheat or coffee. OPEC meetings are known for having a large impact on the oil price. By taking into account such forecasts, you can make the best decisions as to what to buy or sell and when to do so. Because for most people it is easier the follow the news about something they are interested in, we recommend you only trade products or instruments about which you already have some knowledge or are at least very interested in.
Tip 10: Do not make debts with your broker
The tenth and final tip relates to the risks of using a too large leverage ratio. If an unexpected movement occurs, the loss on an open CFD position can quickly soar. In some cases, the stop price is activated, but the position can only be closed at much worse prices, so that the loss for the trader can be much higher than expected. In such cases, and if you trade via a broker that is not regulated, you can lose more money than what is on your account. It is therefore possible to build up debts with your CFD broker. In January 2015 we saw it happen with the Swiss franc, which caused many traders to build up a large amounts of trading debt. At Plus500 however, customers can never lose more than their invested capital. Plus500 is also a well-regulated broker. This will prevent unpleasant surprises!
Hopefully you will use these trading tips for Plus500 wisely. For a more extended tutorial on how to trade with Plus500, go to our Plus500 trading tutorial.
